GEORGE TOWN: Barisan Nasional is countering the state government’s “half truths” about the RM30.11mil loss in the Pulau Jerejak resort project by coming up with its own flyers on the matter.

Penang Barisan Nasional working committee chairman Datuk Dr Teng Hock Nan said 10,000 flyers complete with facts and figures would be printed to be distributed to the public.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s 300,000 flyers had, Dr Teng claimed, misled the people and tarnished the image of the previous state government.

“He was telling only half truths. The fact is, in 2001, the then Penang state government through Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and the federal-owned Urban Development Authority (UDA) came together to develop Pulau Jerejak into an international tourism product.

“Tropical Island Resort (TIR) was incorporated for this purpose with PDC holding 49% and UDA 51% of the stake.

“The project is not owned by any individual,” he said after a weekly committee meeting at the Kompleks Tabung Haji here yesterday.

He added that Phase One of the project was completed while it was up to the state to decide whether to continue with the other two phases.

In late January, the state government printed 300,000 flyers to explain to Penangites the RM30mil loss in the Pulau Jerejak resort project.

Lim had said Penang wanted Barisan Nasional and (former Chief Minister) Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon to return the money and the island to the people.

Dr Teng said figures obtained from the Companies Commission of Malaysia showed that the assets of the resort project including its land, building and others were valued at RM47.6mil in 2001.

“The liability was stated as RM34.1mil, capital investment at RM31.5mil, while book value losses and PDC book value losses (49%) were RM18.5mil and RM9mil respectively,” he said.

“The value of the land today is much higher. So there’s no loss. How can he print thousands of misleading handouts with people’s money on the issue?

“If Lim still feels there is any wrongdoing by any party, I challenge him to initiate legal proceedings immediately,” he added.
