MyDaftar campaign to target as many as possible

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Indians without a birth certificate, identity card or citizenship papers have been asked to keep a date with the National Registration Department (NRD) between Feb 19 and 26.

During this period, 85 NRD special counters will be open on weekdays and weekends for them to apply for these documents, under a national-level MyDaftar campaign.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said Tuesday it was estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 Malaysian Indians did not have these documents due to ignorance or other problems.

"We are targeting as many of these people as possible under the campaign to get them to come forward," he told a news conference after chairing a preparatory meeting on the campaign here.

The campaign is organised by the Cabinet Committee on the Indian Community in collaboration with the NRD and Home Ministry, supported by the Information Communication and Culture Ministry with the assistance of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the MIC, government agencies, teachers and voluntary organisations.

Dr Subramaniam, who is also chairman of the Special Implementation Task Force of the Cabinet Committee on the Indian Community, appealed to people of other communities as well who did not have the documents to register during this period.

He also said that special coordinators have been appointed to carry out the campaign, with the help of volunteers from the MIC and NGOs, in states like Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Malacca, Pahang and Johor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur.

"We will also focus on several specific places. One of these will be Tamil schools, to ensure that none of the children are without birth certificates.

"Another is government and private welfare homes where there could be inmates without proper identification documents," he said. - Bernama
